Not My Eyes!

For as long as I can remember, I was the only member of my family who didn’t have any problems with their eyes. Well… There was that little issue of shingles and that time my eyelashes were growing on the inside of my eyelid, but nothing has ever caused problems with my vision and I’ve been grateful for it. But over the past several months I’ve started to notice a difference in my vision and I think it’s starting to get worse. No doubt from my many nights in the dark in front of the TV or computer (though I’ve been much better about that lately and always have a light on now).

I hate to say it, but I think I might need eye glasses soon… It’s going to completely suck because I don’t know how I’m going to adjust to wearing glasses. After wearing theatrical contacts, I know they’re just not my thing, so I’ll end up having to get actual glasses. Hopefully it won’t be too hard of an adjustment and I won’t have a problem with them. Though, if I can snag myself some cute ones I’m sure I won’t have any problems at all. I’m a sucker for anything that’s cute, and glasses are no different.

Though, lets just hope its my allergies and that my eyes are still A-O-K!

Going in Circles

So I’m home now. I’ve been trying to relax the past couple days but no matter what I do I seem to continue to become more and more stressed. There’s so much that I need to do before I leave for Duquesne and I’m not sure how I’m going to get it all done. I also really need to find a way to make some money because I have no clue how I’m going to pay for all the things that I need. Basically I feel like I’m screwed and it’s really upsetting me because no matter what I do I just can’t seem to get ahead.

The search for quality business cards still continues as well… I can’t find anywhere online that has designs that I like, so I think I’m going to have to shell out a bit of extra money in order to design my own. It’s just what I’m going to have to do if I want to have one that is perfect and fits me / my personality the way I want it to. Just need to figure out how to get the money to pay for them too… I’m sure I’ll figure out a way, since they’re not THAT expensive. Hopefully I can find something that will work out for me.

Hopefully soon I’ll also be able to do some freelancing! Graphics, Web Design/Programming, etc. I’m willing to attempt it all! Anything for some cash!

Life Update

So I figured that it was time for another “life” post. I’m sure you’re all sick of me yammering on about Geocaching and random topics like internet marketing… So I guess I can oblige you and give an update on life at the present state of time…

Today is my last day of classes at the Art Institute of York Pennsylvania… I’m going to miss the teachers, and the classes, and my friends… But I’m NOT going to miss the school. There’s so much bullshit going on here (especially when it comes to housing) and it drives me absolutely batshit. I’ve been so stressed out over it for the past 11 weeks that I’m pretty much chomping at the bit to get out of here. I really wish I could fill out a comment card like you do in restaurants… I filled out a housing survey and I really don’t believe that they liked what I had to say because I held nothing back. Its bullshit that our furnace broke 6 times this winter and they denied it all. It’s bullshit that it took them 6 months to respond to a maintenance request and the only reason they finally came was that my dumb ass roommate burned a wall socket. It’s bullshit that even after asking, we NEVER got our keys for the storage shed and I had to break into it with a credit card… UGH!

I said goodbye to my roommates this morning though and it was sad. I’m really going to miss them.

I also got my acceptance letter to Duquesne University on Monday! I start on my Master’s Degree in August! I’m so excited because I’ll be in a city again and I love city life. I’m pretty sure I’m going to end up going stir crazy back in Towanda for the summer.

When You’re Gone

Now that most of the members of my close family are getting older, the subject of what to do after someone is gone seems to keep coming up more and more. It’s getting to the point now that its almost more expensive for someone to die than it is for them to live. Families are getting hit with outrageous medical bills from their loved ones last days, compounded on top of the already outrageous prices of funerals and burial lots at cemeteries. Pretty soon a funeral is going to cost more than a wedding and I think it’s a shame. I sure don’t want my loved ones to be burdened by huge bills after I’m dead. You’re supposed to be able to grieve and move on; you shouldn’t be having to worry about how you’re going to pay for everything and unfortunately I think that’s what a lot of people are having to deal with nowadays.

I’m still young, but you can bet your bottom that as soon as I settle down and start my family, my number one priority is going to be life insurance. I refuse to leave my spouse / children helpless in the event of my death. If I have insurance then they’ll have that money to help cover funeral and medical bills and hopefully they might even have some left over (depending on how much the policy is worth). I currently have a life insurance plan that my mother got me when I was little, but it’s only worth a couple hundred dollars so it isn’t of any use to me. I’m going to have to do my research and decide the best company to go with, but it’s definitely something that’s on the forefront of my mind.

Custom or Premade Cards

Ever since I got into Geocaching I’ve been trying to come up with what to use as my signature item. Basically it’s an item that is unique to me that I can leave in the caches that I find to let them know “Whitters was here.” I toyed around with the idea of coins, poker chips, etc… But finally I decided on custom business cards which I could place in the caches after filling out the date of the find and the number find it was for me. It was a great idea, but I just needed to figure out where I could get the cards from.

I’ve never been that great at designing things, so in addition to trying to think up my own design, I’ve been also looking at pre-made designs online in hopes of getting inspiration. I’ve seen many sites that offer things like this, such as 123Print and each site I find just makes me want these business cards more and more. So I’m definitely going to be getting some very soon. I think I’ve decided that I want to go with my own design and have them printed from that… So it means I need to get my butt in gear and actually get some designs laid out so that I’ll have some options to choose from.

Anybody else have experience designing business cards? Any tips or suggestions?

Making Online Shopping Easier

Nowadays I do most of my shopping online. But every time I purchase something I end up going through a “did I get the best price” mental debate. I’m an instant gratification kind of person, so I don’t do as much price research as I should when I’m making purchases and because of that I know I pay more than I need to in some cases. That’s why I’m happy to have heard about ShopWiki, a new site which not only helps you compare prices of items from several online retailers but also provides buying guides for those shoppers who need help picking out the perfect item.

At first I was a bit skeptical, since most comparison engines only include the companies that pay to opt into their search results. But ShopWiki’s search results include stores whether they have paid to opt-in or not. For example, I searched for a DVD of Alice in Wonderland for one of the versions of Alice I loved as a child. ShopWiki gave me 12 different places I could purchase the DVD, and not all of them were “major” online retailers. In addition to providing several results, it gave me one that was cheaper than anywhere else I’d looked so far.

I even checked out one of their buying guides (Desktop Computers specifically) just to see how they’re written and was thrilled to see that it covered important topics such as “Should I get a PC or a Mac.” The guide was well written and covered every single thing that I would urge a family member or friend to consider when they were contemplating a new desktop computer purchase. I’d definitely recommend these buying guides to anyone that I know.

But perhaps the most impressive thing about ShopWiki is that they’re not just pandering to an English-speaking population. Many comparison engines are only released in a select few languages and if you don’t speak one of them, then you have to find somewhere else to shop at. But ShopWiki is constantly expanding the number of languages that you can view the site in. You can view it in Dutch, Spanish and more!

All in all, I’m very happy to have heard about ShopWiki, and I will definitely be utilizing their services for a few of my upcoming purchases!
